Do you know what’s in your food? Do you want to know?

One of the reasons I feel so passionate about paleo dieting, is because I want to know what’s in my food. I want to know what I’m putting in my body, and I want to know what I will be putting in my kids’ bodies. It’s a scary thought to think about what might be in our food. So scary, that I think most people try to avoid doing it (I know I use to).

I stumbled upon a food documentary called “The Future of Food”, which was free to watch on www.Hulu.com.   Since the movie is from 2004, there have been many events and much legislation that has taken place since. If you asked Deborah Koons Garcia, the director of this documentary, she would probably say that not enough legislation has taken place; At least not enough to help the public learn about what is really happening with their food.

Immediately after watching the movie, I had to go online and see what has come of the interesting points made in the movie. Luckily for me, The Future of Food, still has a blog that is kept up to date. And they are STILL fighting the good fight to get genetically engineered/modified foods labeled.

You can view the film’s blog here – http://thefutureoffoodfilm.wordpress.com/

I recommend watching the movie. It can be a little slow at times and it is seven years old, but there are some parts that will make you go WOW.

To show you where food is going, they show you where food has been in the past century. Nitrogen based bombs led to nitrogen based fertilizers. Nerve gas was slightly modified to make pesticides. Our systemized agriculture led to increased food production, cheaper prices, and greater availability. But our plants’ genetic uniformity leads to disease and insect vulnerability. Farmers have found themselves on a pesticide treadmill. The more they sprayed, the more they had to spray.

Monsanto made seeds so that the plants would be “roundup ready”, meaning they wouldn’t die when sprayed with roundup. Now the company that sells you the herbicide also sells you the seed. Crops are designed to be sprayed now. In the 1980s, companies like Monsanto were allowed to start patenting the genes. This was the first time that the government allowed a company to patent life, which opens up the door to some scary possibilities. Patent a human gene, and then own the human?

The Future of Food wants you to know what’s in your food. They want the companies who produce genetically modified/engineered foods to have the responsibility of having to label these foods accordingly.  They want the public to determine the future of food by what we purchase and eat, but in order to do that, the public NEEDS TO BE INFORMED.

It’s not a crazy thing to want. Why don’t we want to know what’s in our food? Why don’t we deserve to know?

If you feel the same way, you can go to http://justlabelit.org/ and tell the FDA to label our GE food!
