It’s easy to get stuck in a routine of missing workouts, sitting at a desk or in a car, or spending way too much time in front of a computer. But just like brushing your teeth, the simple act of moving your body is something you should be doing every single day. Once you stop asking your body to perform such basic movements as bending, squatting, lunging, and pushing on a daily basis, your body will lose the capacity to perform these movements safely and efficiently. The saying “if you don’t use it, you lose it” is absolutely true when it comes to how you move your body on a daily basis. Basic movement is absolutely vital to a high quality life.
This post and video will provide you with a simple routine that you can do everyday to feel your best and combat the effects of too much time sitting or standing in the same position all day. You can perform it as a warm up before your workout of the day, to wake you up first thing in the morning, or to unwind after a long day at the computer.
The video below demonstrates 10 basic movements that you can perform one after another and requires almost no space. The 10 movements are air squats, samson stretch, single leg deadlifts, side lunges, 3-point touches, inch worms, spiderman lunges, pass throughs, good mornings, and overhead squats. The only piece of equipment you will need is a pvc pipe or broom stick, but you can do most of the routine without this. If using this to wake yourself up first thing in the morning or to break up the monotony of your day, I suggest doing 1 round through of 8-12 reps of each movement. If you would prefer to use it as a warm up or a workout in and of itself, you can add a 2nd or 3rd round to the routine.
